Oliver St John Gogarty – The Real Buck Mulligan

18.00 14.40

“Stately, plump Buck Mulligan”, the opening words of Ulysses, James Joyce’s acclaimed masterpiece. Oliver St John Gogarty, on whom “Buck Mulligan” was modelled, felt himself traduced. “Joyce has written a book that can be read on all the lavatory walls of Dublin.”

Issued on the centenary of the publication of Ulysses, this biography of the author’s grandfather aspires to redress Joyce’s wilful misrepresentation of his former friend and benefactor.

The Author

GUY ST JOHN WILLIAMS, a fourth generation member of the Tullamore Dew and Irish Mist dynasty, eventually heeded another legacy, as a writer. Remission from a lifelong involvement in horse racing has allowed him to complete numerous books, not all of them related to his primary preoccupation. Previous works include A Year in Connemara and The Renvyle Letters.
Happily resident in the vicinity of the “Venice of Ireland”, he and Milady have five adult offspring and several grandchildren.
